Best choice if your budget is $ 250.
The build quality is about the same as the cheap disposable shop vac products sold by Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, and such. The plastic body turns white under the force of bolting on the metal handle bar. The plastic wheels are held on the axle by push on caps. The inlet port baffle clogs easily, and when removed, liquid and mud fly straight onto the filter. The hose was kinked by careless packing. The thing is no more ready for a job site than any other cheap shop vac, and the lift to empty it is awkward for one man. The performance is better than the cheap shop vac products at the "Big Box" stores, almost as good as a real commercial grade shop vac. At the $ 250 sale price, the 962-20-00 SR is between the cheap shop vacs and the commercial shop vacs in cost and performance. If you are on a budget and need a cheap shop vac, you would do well to pay just $ 100 more and get the better performance and motor warranty this model offers.

STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!
I decided to spend more money on a shop vac with a more powerful motor (12 AMP) after reading that more of the smaller ones sold in big box stores end up with the motor dying. After using this shop vac for 2 months, the motor died and it can not be fixed. Our last shop vac (purchased at Home Depot for around $80) lasted 3 years. I went to return this and saw that you can only return after one month so a huge loss of money.
OK - but misleading info on Amazon - and they have been told about discrepencies 6 months ago!
The vacuum works well when it works. I too had a kinked hose(other reviewer had same problem) due to poor packaging. I called the factory and they sent me a new hose no questions asked. The factory person did not care that they had a packaging problem... It also came with a defective caster and it too was replaced no questions asked.

After a few months of light use, it would not start reliably. I took it apart and found the plastic switch button was not designed to allow full depression of the switch under it. I had to grind away some plastic to allow full stroke of the button. Now it works again.

WARRANTY- be warned: IT IS NOT WARRANTED FOR 10 YEARS - ONLY THE MOTOR ITSELF carries that warranty. THE MOTOR CONTROLLER AND EVERYTHING ELSE IS ONLY WARRANTED FOR 1 YEAR. SHAME ON AMAZON FOR CONTINUING TO ALLOW THE ADVERTISEMENT SAYING 10 YEAR WARRANTY! I had already contacted Amazon about this roughly 6 months ago.

Adequate for the price
After surveying them all I chose the Shop Vac Ultra over the runner up Craftsman only because of brand loyalty. i deferred from buying a similar model at a big box store because the price including delivery here was less and this model didn't have a pump sitting in the bottom of the cannister. I didn't need that.

It's quiet and the motor has a smooth all-is-well sound to it. I don't need the ear muffs in a closed shop although out of habit I'll probably wear them anyway. Lock on hose is a definite plus for pulling the unit tag-a-long style. Plenty of 2 1/2" hose. Doesn't come with a smaller 1 1/4" hose which is handy for attaching to tools. Low profile fits under many benches etc.. but tool caddy sticks out obtrusively...small annoyance. Suction on dry pick up is fine with sawdust and general pickup. Has a deflector positioned inside the canister to keep sucked up projectiles from going crazy in there and destroying the filter. My last 20 gal. shop Vac lasted...

Excellent vac, only problem is attachment storage
I bought mine from Westlake Ace hardware about 3-4 yrs ago, I had originally bought a smaller vac but it didn't have the suction power I wanted from a shopvac, so I returned it and paid the difference for the most powerful shop vac they had in stock, the 6.5 hp 18 gallon model. I am very impressed with the power mine has, plus it's made here in the USA which is a huge selling point for me, I would be willing to bet Shop Vac is the only brand made here. It's also surprisingly quiet, not much louder than a standard vacuum you use for your floors. My only complaint is the tool storage deal, it comes with several attachments/tools and they don't fit very well onboard, so you'll have to pay attention so you don't lose any of them. If I had to buy another, I wouldn't hesitate buying this same model again.
My own little Star Wars R2D2
I can't remember how many years ago I bought the 18 gal. 6.5 HP machine but it is all black and I paid less than $80 for it at the big orange store if that narrows it down.

It is the hardest working tool in my workshop/garage. I store it under my work bench and it is the last thing I use before I turn off the light. I vacuum whatever tool(s) I used and then clean up the floor around them. It then rolls back under my bench like R2D2.

I have a 2HP VERY LOUD dust collector that attach to my bigger machines like the cabinet saw and band saw but I still need some sort of above the table clean up. I hook the ShopVac directly to my routing table, sander or biscuit jointer. It should come with a 1 1/4" attachment but you can buy them at the same place where you get the disposable bags.

I abuse this thing all the time! I have put off emptying it so many times that when I do open the lid it pops up four inches because the dust and debris is compressed in the...
